Godet Dress Modification

I love this dress that I made using Mood Sewciety's free Dyanna Dress pattern. It flows beautifully when I skate, and it's mesmerizing when I spin.  It was designed specifically for my program to the song "Gold" from the musical Once. (See it here if you are so inclined!)

I still have at least one more competition I want to skate this program in. Unfortunately, the dress is getting to be too big to skate in as I've lost nearly 60 lbs in the past year. So, I was left with a bit of a conundrum. How do I take the dress four inches while preserving the godets?

A search of Google and some of my favorite sites for sewing information yielded nothing. So I had to get a bit creative.

When looking at the dress and figuring out the best way to get 4 inches out of it, I realized I only needed to pull it in at the waist. The flare of the skirt and the top were acceptable. What I realized is that I could actually use double sided darts in between the godets and pull in an inch between all of them in the back. That gave me the requisite four inches and seemed like it would keep the appearance of the dress.

So that's what I did, and they came out beautifully! Even more invisible than I imagined!

How I did it:
  1. Measured the distance between the tops of two adjacent godets.
  2. Marked the middle, then marked half an inch on each side. That gave me the inch to pull in.
  3. Parallel to the godets, I marked 4" above the center and 4" below the center. Those became the endpoints for each side of the dart.
  4. Drew the lines, pinned, and sewed.

I'm really proud of myself for figuring this one out! I often think things will work, and they usually don't. But this time it did, and it looks better than I expected! Can't wait to compete in it later this month!
